PS3 owners got, for lack of a better term, the royal shaft when it came to getting their platform’s version of BioShock. Not only did said version not arrive until more than a year after the game’s PC and 360 iterations hit store shelves, but it also brought with it a few unsavory friends in the form of graphical problems and full-blown crashes, which it picked up during the porting process. Fortunately, that won’t be the case for Irrational Games’ 2012 entry into the franchise, BioShock Infinite, as the studio has no plans to pass the developmental buck to any outside parties.

The game’s technical director, Chris Kline, recently explained on the Irrational Games forums that “We have a much larger team than we did on the original BioShock, so we’re doing simultaneous in-house development on the PS3, 360, and PC versions of the game.” Thank goodness! We were afraid we would once again have to fool ourselves into thinking that any potential crashes were actually just the result of a super powerful, world-ending Plasmid.

How cool were the water effects in the original BioShock? You probably thought they were stock Unreal Engine 2.5 assets, right? Well, get this. Irrational Games actually developed the water graphics in house! The reason for this is simple. They had to get the water effects correct because it was so critical in selling the underwater city of Rapture. At the end of the day they did a good job.
The artists at Irrational Games were successful in making BioShock look UE3 as opposed to UE2.5.

The best part is that irrational has promised a lot in the future as well. The UE3 powered BioShock Infinite, which is still on the way, will be a newer, and much improved, version. “Right from the outset we realized that thіѕ wаѕ going to be a monumental undertaking on the tech side,” said Irrational tech director Chris Kline, “but dесіdеd it wаѕ a challenge that we simply had to take on in order to give gamers the kind of quality experience thеу’ve come to expect from Irrational Games аnd BioShock.” Kline went on to say that they almost used a heavily modified version of UE2.5 that they had already invested in. However, according to Kline, it was “tοο under-powered and unwieldy for the depth and complexity of the gameplay and narrative we had рlаnnеd.” In the end, Irrational began modifying the base of Unreal Engine 3 so that they could provide the best experience.

It’s coming. Viva PC Gaming Week!

Over on the 2K forums, 2K Elizabeth spreads the news that BioShock 2′s PC patch as well as the Protector Trials and Minvera’s Den downloadable expansions — both of which are out for the console versions of the game — are back in development.

The patch and Protector Trials had been scuttled because they were too buggy when 2K’s deadline for them hit. Minerva’s Den (which we liked a lot on console) just wasn’t done. Following a rash of fan feedback and an unexplained change in resources or priorities, 2K Elizabeth says work on all of that is being resumed.

2K estimates the patch and Protector Trials will be out in December and will offer them for free. Minerva’s Den’s schedule is more murky, though 2K Elizabeth says the team is committed to finishing it and releasing it.

Update: Protector Trials, Minerva’s Den, and final patch coming to a PC near you [2K Games Forums]

If you’re a PC gamer that’s been waiting to get your feet wet in BioShock 2‘s pair of DLC expansions, the “Protector Trials” and “Minerva’s Den,” you’re in for a disappointing next few minutes. A 2K Games representative recently commented on the game’s official forums, explaining that “we will also not be offering Protector Trials and Minerva’s Den on the PC in the future,” citing “timing and technical issues” as the reason for the expansions’ non-appearance.

The representative went on to apologize for “the disappointment this will cause to PC players out there,” though we wouldn’t worry too much about that, as PC gamers are almost certainly used to it by this point.

Only the HDD is left out of the oil, the rest dunked under the surface and guarded by a Big Daddy.

If you watched the ten minute-long dose of BioShock Infinite gameplay, you might have wondered how the rollercoaster-in-the-sky action sequences were going to work, what those tracks were for and how BioShock creative director Ken Levine might describe them.

Wonder no more! Those motion sickness inspiring moments are fully playable and seemingly a key component of BioShock Infinite’s gameplay. “Imagine being on a roller coaster, over another roller coaster, over another roller coaster,” Levine tells the official PlayStation blog. “Imagine being able to jump freely from one roller coaster to the next. Then imagine people are shooting at you. And you’re shooting at them. That’s the experience of being on the Sky-Lines.”

I’m queasy already. But Ken continues.

“You might choose to take on enemies at extremely long range while traveling on Sky-Lines, or you might engage in close combat,” he says. “You might do both in quick succession. You can jump between criss-crossing Sky-Line routes, allowing you to instantly change direction and evade or outflank enemies. Sky-Lines are there to expand your tactical options, not dictate them.”

Sounds crazy, complicated and maybe a little bit fun too. We’re still at least 14 months away from the arrival of the next big BioShock, so the soothing, informative sounds of Ken Levine speaking will have to do for now. Read the full interview at the European PlayStation blog.
